Unconscious feelings

And so it goes. All the hidings and denyings and disguises are promissory notes to peace of mind. But they are counterfeit. They leave the true feelings hidden and therefore less subject to guidance and rational control. They leave our children more frightened and more unhappy.

The same goes for us.

Without knowing why, countless adolescents--and countless adults--go through life not liking themselves and feeling wicked and bad.

Walling off the unwanted feelings from consciousness does not banish them.

UNCONSCIOUS FEELINGS manage to FIND THEIR OWN WAY OUT.

We do far better if we help our boys and girls see even belatedly that sex and body feelings are natural. So are resentments, with resentment to us, their parents, the most natural resentment of all.
